Working to Protect California Teams and Staff
with California SB 553 Media.
On September 30, 2023, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senate Bill (SB) No. 553, which requires virtually every California employer to implement a comprehensive workplace violence prevention plan (WVPP) with very specific requirements in 2024. It’s now up to each company in California over 10 employees to comply with SB 553 guidelines and training materials.
The good news is BHM and partners are here to help you.
Workplace Violence Prevention plans are about preparing, educating and training your staff to be aware of possible situations for reporting, monitoring and prevention. These workplace issues range widely from arguments in the office, uninvited problematic guests coming to the office that could create related issues. They also unfortunately range into the truly violent as incidents of attacks with firearms, bomb threats and other ‘terror’ attacks directed at the company and their employees. We trust that by creating powerful media and educational materials we can help you.

Note: The SB 553 law exempts worksites with less than 10 employees. If the worksite has less than 10 employees present “at any given time” and is not “accessible to the public,” and the employer complies with the injury and illness prevention Cal/OSHA regulation, then the worksite may be exempt from the new law.
California SB 553 is a groundbreaking bill aimed at enhancing workplace safety by establishing comprehensive violence prevention programs and educational media for staff trainings. The bill recognizes the growing concern of workplace violence and seeks to equip employers and employees with the necessary tools to prevent and respond to such incidents effectively.
Key provisions of SB 553 include:
Workplace Violence Prevention Program: The bill mandates that employers develop and implement a workplace violence prevention program to identify and mitigate potential risks. This program will include risk assessments, policies and procedures for reporting and responding to incidents, and employee training.
Educational Media for Staff Trainings: SB 553 requires employers to provide educational media for staff trainings on workplace violence prevention. This media will be designed to educate employees on recognizing warning signs, de-escalation techniques, and how to respond in the event of an incident.
Collaboration with Experts: The bill encourages collaboration with experts in workplace violence prevention, such as law enforcement agencies and mental health professionals, to develop effective prevention strategies and response protocols.
Recordkeeping and Reporting: Employers will be required to maintain records of workplace violence incidents and report serious incidents to the relevant authorities. This information will be used to track trends and improve prevention efforts by internal HR teams.
Employee Rights: SB 553 emphasizes the rights of employees to a safe and secure workplace and provides protections for employees who report or are victims of workplace violence.
Overall, California SB 553 represents a significant step towards ensuring workplace safety and preventing violence. By establishing comprehensive prevention programs and providing educational resources, the bill aims to create safer work environments for all Californians.*
