Why your passion alone will not get it done!
“You’ve heard it a thousand times. Follow your passion. Usually, we take this to mean that if you love to write, then you should become a writer. If you love marketing, then you should become a marketer. And so on. ”
We all hear this motto to follow your passion as the main beacon of what it takes to start and build a new business as an entrepreneur! The truth is, this is just one important factor for guidance to what you should be doing with your life's work. But it is certainly not enough to grow, sustain and maintain a successful business, career or path in this life.... alone. So what else is required you ask?
Think of your business like the parts of a car.
The frame and structure of your car is your why and it shapes the form of your work.
The wheels and undercarriage are the how of your business, the delivery system.
The engine is truly empathy... for who you want to serve in your life/business. Deeply understanding their pains and what causes them to suffer... this is your power machine!
The transmission is to shift you is up and down is compassion for the community you want to serve.
Your passion is simply the fuel you add into to make it all move... the fuel you add to the fire!
Remember you are the driver of this car... and you will need all the skills it requires to drive fast to win.
A driver is fueled by many motivations, one being hustle to be the best... to win the race. No one dreams of being second or seventh, honestly. Your hustle is the work... the main critical factor that no one can dictate for you only you decide how much to work.
Being able to manage your internal zen (a.k.a. balance) is hyper-critical to manage all the emotions, energy and flow that will arise down this path. Understanding your energy and gaining perspective allows you to choose powerfully, not be guided by 'action + reactions' only.
Under this analogy, you will also surely also need skilled mechanics, experts and mentors to help you keep it running fast. This is your community and is a required component of any winner, the people in the shadows that supported them. The illusion and entrepreneurial myth is that you are acting all alone... yet no one does it alone. Look deep enough, peel back the layers and there are people that are there to support you at all stages.
Think about not only your passions but these additional qualities to entrepreneurship:
1} PASSION - A strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything (self).
2} EMPATHY - The psychological identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another (customers, users, clients).
3} COMPASSION - A feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another (customers, users, clients) who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering (your business solution).
4} HUSTLE - To be aggressive, especially in business or other financial dealings (the work).
5} ZEN - A discipline and practice that emphasizes enlightenment for the student (to find balance amongst the chaos).
